We believe by speaking and living out the Word of God it is possible to bring transformation to communities. At present Project Shine is based in a community in the city centre of Fortaleza kingdom of God
At project Shine we work with the children of the community, the majority that come from broken families. Each Saturday we have a kids club for them called the ‘club of light’. We also work on Saturday afternoon with teenagers, many of whom are already involved in prostitution and drugs. We aim to be positive role models to them whilst sharing the life changing wisdom and power of God’s word.
We continue our activities during the week with home visits where we work with the families. We have developed a series of studies on ‘building families on the rock’ and ‘the Cross that brings transformation’. Our concern for the holistic wellbeing of a person means that we are not only focused on the person’s inclusion into God’s family but also their inclusion into the wider society as a whole, as many coming from this community are often ostracised from it. We have a computer house where we provide courses to prepare people for the workplace; we provide practical and professionalization courses and also offer micro loans to help people start working so they are able to provide for their family without the need to sell drugs, steal or get involved in prostitution which currently are the main sources of income of the community.
Such courses we have offered so far include cooking courses in partnership with a local company, courses on making chocolates, truffles, Easter eggs, decorative soap and jewery amongst others. With the micro loans we have provided, people of the community have been able to buy things like a sewing machine, a hot stove, material to start selling cakes, a refrigerator, and material to start a small clothing shop. We have seen that once people start using their God given skills and become a productive member of society their self esteem increases and hope returns to them and their families.
All activities that take place in the community are run by YWAM staff and local volunteers from various churches. The project can’t exist without volunteers and we are always looking for more people willing to bring God’s light to the darkness.
