Passeando e se preparando para Natal.
Sempre há algo acontecendo no BRILHAR, e essa semana estamos levando os meninos do nosso grupo de discipulado para um passeio! Esse dias são tempos muito bons para as crianças serem crianças num ambiente alegre e seguro!Estamos muito abençoados que dois jovens da igreja Assembleia de Deus na comunidade, Nedson e Moacir, estão vindo ensinar bateria e violão aos meninos todo sábado. E muito empolgate ver pessoas da comunidade se envolvendo. E vimos até alguns deles completando a escola noturna da JOCUM, ENVIA. Isso e muito encorajador.
Natal está chegando, e já estamos nos preparando para fazer uma grande festa de Natal com todas as crianças e adolescentes dos nossos grupos. Também queremos fazer uma ceia de Natal para a comunidade para os abençoar e honrar, e poder comunicar o amor de Cristo- a razão para que nós temos Natal.
Então lembrem-se de orar por nós! Orem que a Verdade da Palavra de Deus e o amor de Cristo possam entrar nos corações das crianças e adultos quem nós ministramos todos os dias, e que Jesus seja glorificado!

Out and about and gearing up for Christmas…
There is always something going on at SHINE, and this week we are taking the boys in our discipleship group for a day out! These days out are such a good opportunity for the children to be children and have fun in a safe environment.We are also so blessed to have two of the young people in the local Assemblies of God church, Nedson and Moacir, join us weekly to teach drums and guitar to the boys in our group. It is so cool to see people from the local community get involved. And we have even seen some of them do our YWAM nightschool which is a great encouragment.
Christmas is coming up soon and we are already busy preparing for a big Christmas party where all the children from our groups will come together. We’re also hoping to do a Christmas meal for the community to bless and honour them and communicate the love of Christ- the reason why we have Christmas in the first place.
So keep us in your prayers. Pray that the Truth of God’s word and the love of Christ would enter into the hearts of the children and adults we minister to every day, and pray that Jesus be glorified!!

O “Clubinho da luz”- sendo crianças.
Semana passade fizemos um passeio para as 47 crianças quem fazem parte do nosso “Clubinho da luz”. Elas se reunem todo sábado pela manhã, e esse dia nós pudiamos leva-las à um sítio com piscina. Elas amavam o dia! E foi maravilhoso ver muitos voluntários vindo conosco para ajudarem, inclusive 7 mulheres de Deus da Igreja Lake Hills dos EUA.
Ore por essas crianças. Quando estão conosco ouvem do amor de Deus e do poder transformador de Jesus, mas o resto da semana elas ouçam muitas coisas negativas sendo faladas ou redor e sobre elas. Ore que a Verdade de Jesus possa ser enraizada nos seus corações e suas mentes.
The “light-club”- being children.
Last week we had a day out for the 47 children who are part of our “Clubinho da luz” (light-club). They meet every Saturday morning and this day we were able to take them to the countryside to an estate with a swimming pool. They absolutely loved it! And it was great to see many volunteers come to help out, including 7 women of God from Lake Hills Church in the US.
Pray for these children. When they are with us they hear of the love of God and the transforming power of Jesus, but the rest of the week they hear so many negative things spoken around and over them. Pray for the Truth of Jesus to take deep root in their hearts and minds.

Enchendo a comunidade com fragrânçia.
Há muito tempo que sabemos a verdade no proverbio chinês que diz: “não dá a alguem um peixe sem dar uma vara de pesca”, e é isso que temos como alvo a fazer em muito do nosso trabalho. Reconhecemos que cada pessoa possui talentos e abilidades que muitas vezes precisam apenas de serem acordados para que elas se levantam e vivam uma vida cheia.
Isso é a verdade em Oitão Preto (a comunidade carente) onde trabalhamos, onde a ecônomia principal é basiada em tráfico de drogas e prostituição. Aqueles que recebem Jesus e saiam daquela vida precisam de um meio para se sustentar.
O curse mais recente que ofereciamos era curso de fazer sabão. No curso tivemos esposas de traficantes, pessoas que sairam do viçio de drogase e prião e se tornaram Cristões, e outras pessoas carentes sem renda fixa para sustentarem as suas famílias.
Uma dessas mulheres veio a mim uma tarde perguntando por 1 real para comprar sopa para a sua mãe de 90 anos que não tinha comida o dia toda. Eu vui vista-la e encontrei uma casa vazia cheia de pessoas com fome. Então eu levei sopa à elas e a convidei para participar no curso de sabão que ia começar a semana seguinte. Ela veio e agora tem um meio de sustentar a sua família sem ser dependente de nós levarmos comida a ela todo dia. A auto-estíma dela tem crescida e ela tem novamente esperança em sua vida.
Um outro rapaz que tem beneficiado desse iniciativa é um rapaz que estava envolvida em muitos assaltos armados e quem passou muito tempo preso. Ele mora agora com sua esposa e 5 filhos numa casinha mais ou menos 3 por 5 metros de tamanho. Ele se tornou um Cristão firme, um manso gigante comparando com a pessoa que ele era antes. Uma noite ele não tinha nada para a sua família comer, então ele fez todos se sentarem para orarem que Deus iria provideciar. Assim que ele terminou a oracao alguem bateu na porta com um envelope de dinheiro, dizendo que Deus tinha falado a dar o dinheiro para eles. Deus realmente providencia em maneiras especiais, mas Ele tem tambem nos dado mãos e inteligência para agir nós mesmos. Agora esse homen pega casca de côco que ele limpa, pole, e enverniza para depois vender para nós e nós as usamos para o sabão de côco que vendemos.
Esteja orando por nós enquanto ofereçemos os cursos, que saibamos quais cursos a oferecere, e o mais importante: que acima do tudo que eles possam conhecer Jesus mais.
Filling the community with fragrance.
We have long realised the truth in the old Chinese proverb “don’t give someone a fish if you can give them a fishing rod”, and that is what we have aimed to do in much of our work. We realise each person has talents and abilities that often just need to be awaken and unlocked for them to rise up and live a full life.This is especially true in Oitão Preto (the poor community) where we work, where the main economy is based on drugs and prostitution. Those who receive Jesus and leave that lifestyle need a viable alternative to make a living.
The most recent course we ran was teaching how to make soap. On the course we had the wives of the main drug dealers; people who have come off drugs or out of prison and become Christians, and other people who are needy who have no fixed income to support their families.
One such lady came to me in the late afternoon one day asking if I could give her 30p to buy some soup for her mother who was 90 years old and hadn’t eaten all day. I went to visit her and found a bare house with lots of hungry people inside. So I brought some soup for her and invited her to come participate in the soap course that started the following week. She did and she now has a way to support her family without having to rely on us every day to bring food. Her self-esteem has shot up and she has hope back in her life.
Another guy who has benefited from this enterprise is a guy who used to be involved in lots of armed assaults, and had been in prison for a long time. He now lives with his wife and 5 children in a hut about 3 by 5 meters. He has become a strong Christian, a gentle giant compared to the guy he used to be. One night he too had nothing to eat for his family and so he sat them down and prayed that God would provide. Just as he finished praying someone came knocking at the door with an envelope containing money saying God had told him to give it to them. God does provide in special ways, but He has also given us hands and intelligence to do things ourselves. Now this man collects old coconut shells that he cleans, polishes and varnishes and then sells them to us so we can use them for the coconut soap we sell.
Be praying for us as we offer courses, that we would know what courses to offer and most importantly: that above all they would come to know Jesus in a deeper way.

Conseguimos juntos!
Alguns meses atraz recebemos uma equipe de Havaí que fez clínicas dentárias e médicas e tambêm um clubinho de crianças. Uma outra espressão prática do amor de Deus e o cuidado dEle para as pessoas da comunidade. Foi uma semana maravilhosa, mas a melhor parte era que conseguimos que todas as três igrejas na comunidade se envolveram e trabalharam juntas. Foi incrível vê-las sair das quatro paredes da igreja e impactando a comunidade os seus vizinhos ao redor. Nós tivemos bastante atividades, cada um em uma das igrejas ou no projeto.Além da oração, evangelismo e equipes médicos, tivemos equipes de limpeza. A comunidade é conhecida como um ponto de venda de drogas, e para entrar a comunidade é preciso passar por um beco estreito. Uma das nossas atividades era pintar a parede toda na entrada da comunidade e com a ajuda dos jovens talentosos das igrejas, pintar uma nova parede. Agora as muitas pessoas que passam por lá vejam e estão sendo recebidas por essa parede proclamando esperança para a comunidade.
Na noite final tivemos um grande culto com todas as igrejas participando na praça principal da comunidade e muitas pessoas da comunidade vieram.
Estamos começando a ver Deus impactando essa comunidade! Como diz no livro de Romanos na Bíblia, capítulo 5: “onde pecado aumentou, a graça aumentou mais”. As igrejas agora querem organizar um outro impacto em conjunto, e eu acredito que quasi tudo é possível.
- Ore pela unção de Deus e o Espirito Santo em nossas vidas para nos dá sabedoria, amor, energia e poder para levar o Seu Reino à comunidade.
- Ore pelos dois traficantes principais da comunidade, que eles e as suas famílias aceitam Jesus.
- Ore por união entre as igrejas da comunidade, e que pessoas locais sejam inspiradas a se envolver no trabalho.
- Ore por mais obreiros tempo integral.
Together we can do it
A few months ago we received a team from Hawaii, which set up medical and dentist clinics and did a children’s holiday club. Another practical expression of God’s love and care for the people of the community. It was a great week, but the best part of all was that we managed to get the three churches in the community involved and working together. It was amazing to get them out from within the four walls of the church and actually impacting the community and their neighbours around them. We had many activities, each held in one of the churches or our project.As well as having prayer, evangelism and medical teams, we also had clean up teams. The community is notorious in the city for selling drugs, and to enter the community you need to pass through a narrow walkway where the drug guys keep a look out. For one of the activities we managed to repaint the whole main entrance wall to the slum, and with the help of the talented youngsters of the churches paint a new wall. Now the many people who pass by to buy their drugs each day will see and be welcome by the wall calling for a better place and community.
On the final night we had a big open-air service with all churches taking part in the main square of the community, and many people from the community were present.
We are starting to see God impacting this community! As it says in Romans 5: “where sin increased, grace increased all the more”. The churches now want to organise another joint impact to the community, and I believe that nearly anything is possible.
- Pray for God’s anointing and Spirit in our lives to give us wisdom, love, energy and power to bring His kingdom to the community.
- Pray for two of the main drug dealers in the community that we have lots of contact with – that they and their families will accept Jesus.
- Pray for unity among the churches in the community and that the locals will be inspired to get involved in the work.
- Pray for more full time staff.

Biscoito e união- BRILHAR continua brilhando.
No ”BRILHAR” o trabalho continua. Os últimos meses temos realizado varios cursos para as mulheres da comunidade na àrea culinaria, e recentemente um curso de fazer sabão de frutas. É imperativo que as mulheres recebem ferramentos para poder se sustentar. Muitas delas eram envolvidas em prostituição e drogas, e agora precisam de um outro meio de ganhar dinheiro. Outras tem maridos que eram traficantes ou utilizaram meios ilegais para ganhar dinheiro, e essas mulheres podem agora fazer parte de prover para as suas famílias numa maneira honesta e digna.Os vários equipes que vieram nos ajudar na comunidade têm sido uma grande benção para nós! Não apenas nas maneiras práticas, mas nós ficamos tão abençoados quando pessoas vem e recebam o amor e o coração de Deus pelo povo de Oitão Preto.
Estamos vendo os Cristões da comunidade se uniram. Foi maravilhoso num reunião nós tivemos, ver os irmãos da Assembléia sentados lado ao lado com os surfistas de Cristo cheio de tatoagens. Isso reflete um pouco de como vai ser no céu! E união do corpo de Cristo é a chave para unção!
O caminho para frente ainda é longa…nos últimos meses vimos pessoas queridas nossas morrer como consequênça das vidas que viveram. Mas cremos que temos a resposta e sabemos que o coração de Jesus é ver a transformação dessa comunidade! Você faz parte de tudo isso! Continua intercedendo por nós!
Biscuits and unity- SHINE still shining.
At ”SHINE” the work continues. The last months we have seen several courses run especially for the women of the community; we have done some in the culinary field and we also recently just finished a course in making fruit soap. It is vital that the women of the community learn skills and can support their families. Many of the women have been involved in drugs and prostitution, and now need another way to get an income. Others have husbands who have turned away from drug trafficking and other illegal means of earning money, and these women can now be a part of providing for their families in an honest and dignified way.The various team that have come to help us out in the community have been a great blessing to us! Apart from the practical help they have given, it always blesses us when people come and receive the love and heart of God for the people of Oitão Preto.
We are also seeing the Christians in the community come together. It was amazing to see one of the meetings we had where the traditional Assemblies of God brothers sat side by side with the tatooed surfers for Christ. This is part of what it’ll be like in heaven! And unity of the body of Christ is the key to anointing!
There is still a long way to go…in the recent months we’ve seen people very dear to our heart die as a consequence of the lives they have been living. But we believe that we have the answer and we know that Jesus’ heart is to see a transformation of this community! You are part of that! Keep interceding for us!

Vitórias e lágrimas.
Os últimos meses temos visto muitas lutas e muitas vitórias. Temos nos alegrado por ver as vitórias tanto no Oitão Preto como no sítio. Temos chorado sobre as vidas perdidas. Muito obrigada à todos que tem nos apoiado em oração! Sem Deus realmente não existe esperança, mas com Ele milagres aconteçam!
”BRILHAR”
Podendo finalmente usar uma casa na própria comunidade é uma grande vitória! Temos realizado cultos e vigílias lá, e também trabalhado com os vários grupos da comunidade. SENAC fez um curso de doces e salgados que foi muito bom!
Mas estamos muito conscientes que a nossa batalha é espiritual. Precisamos mais do que tudo ver mais intercessão e louvor saindo da casa.
”Sítio Graça”
O sítio está muito bem. A empolgação era grande de ver o retorno de Peter e Selma em março depois de passar um tempo bem mereçido de férias e divulgação. Esse ano tem uns desafios muito legais, em particular para Paulinho e Paulo quem estão tomando passos para realizar os seus sonhos. Paulinho está querendo fazer uma escola creativa na Noruega, e Paulo quer fazer ETED em Salvador com prático na África. Orem por eles, e se você deseja contribuir financeiramente, entre em contato conosco! Os outros meninos estão crescendo e andando nos caminhos do Senhor.
Nós ainda precisamos ver mais obreiros se juntar a Peter, Selma, Fabiano e Dayane. Temos um desejo muito forte de poder dar a oportunidade de mudança de vida para mais meninos que atualmente estão enfrentando uma vida sem esperança nas ruas. Queremos vê-los conhecer Jesus e ser transformados pela graça de Deus! Orem por pessoas de compromisso! Cremos que Deus tem muito mais para nós.
A realidade que tem nos saccudido.
Os últimos meses realmente tem nos saccudido. Nós recebemos notícias de que 3 dos nosso jovens (maiores de idade) foram mortos. Os dois meninos e uma menina eram todos bem conhecido por nós e nós tivemos trabalhado muito com eles e as suas famílias. Um era um dos primeiros meninos a morar no sítio. Os meninos foram matados fugindo da polícia, a menina morreu de facada. As história são terriveis. Elas refletam a realidade de onde das crianças, adolescentes, e adultos, que fazem a rua seu lar, estão indo se não haja mudança.
Tomé (um dos meninos que passou muito tempo no síto, mas decidiu a sair) está muito consciente disso. Domingo ele apareceu na igreja com muito medo. Ele sabe que é um milagre que ele ainda vive. Depois de sair do Febem a sua vida tem sido crack e assaulto armado. Tivemos uma longa conversa com ele, e o deixamos com os líderes de ”Lar da Paz” (o centro de desintoxicação da igreja)…Orem por ele.
Um outro rapaz que nós amamos muito está no prisão servindo 30 anos por homicidio.
Ecolhemos esperança!
Enfrentando tudo isso é facíl perder a esperança. Mas recusamos a perde-la! Enquanto há vida, há esperança!
Nós lembramos as vitórias nas vidas dos meninos no sítio, a casa na comunidade, e a história de Fransica (uma menina da comunidade que tive problemas sérias com os olhos) que recebeu tratamento dos problemas de olhos e está fazendo um curso.

Victory and tears.
The past few months we’ve seen many ups and downs. We’ve rejoiced at the victories both in Oitão Preto and on the farm. We’ve cried over lives lost. We thank those of you who have stood with us in prayer! Without God there truly is no hope, but with Him miracles happen!
”Shine”
Finally being able to work out from a house located in the community is a great victory! We have had services and prayer meetings there, as well as working with different groups in the community. SENAC (a private non-profit organisation focused on offering courses to all of society) also held a 3-week course in the house on how to make sweet and savoury snacks for parties which went really well.
We do, however, realize that we are in a spiritual battle. What we need more then anything is to see more intercession and worship come forth from the house.
We choose to keep remembering the victories in the lives of the boys at the farm, the house in the community, and the story of Graziela (a teenager from the community with severe eyeproblems) getting free treatment for her eyeproblems and doing a course.

- pray for the kids and adults who still live on the streets.
- pray for Thomas- that God would redeem and restore him.

Um bom final do ano e os desafios para frente.
Já estamos quasi no fim de janeiro, e queremos desejar a todos um Feliz Ano Novo!
Tivemos muitas festas de Natal em Oitão Preto para os vários grupos nós atendemos lá. Com os homens fomos jogar futebol no campo de Gerrardo Bastos (que fica na próximo ao projeto), e depois comemos carchorro quente no projeto e o nosso obreiro Fabiano deu seu testemunho. Vimos por volta de 30 participar, entre eles muitos traficantes. Foi muito bom.
Esteja orando por nós:
Fizemos também festas para as crianças e as mulheres envolvidas no projeto de estabelecer pequenas empresas para que elas possam sustenar as suas famílias.
Estamos no processo de alugar uma casa na comunidade para poder oferecer cursos e fazer as nossas atividades. Como sempre nessas coisas, há batalha espíritual. Mas cremos que Deus está no controle e nós sabemos que a nossa presença lá, físicamente como luz dentro da comunidade, terá um impacto enorme nas pessoas morando lá e em todas as atividades feitas lá.

- Ore pelo trabalho nos Febemce- pela organização, e que a Verdade possa libertar esses jovens.
A good ending to the year and challenges ahead.
We are well into 2008, and so we do wish all of you a Happy New Year!
We had many good parties over Christmas in Oitão Preto for the various groups we have with the people there. With the men we played football at Gerardo Bastos (a company one block away from the project which works with car repairs and has a football pitch they let us use) followed by hot dogs and a powerful testimony from our staff member Fabiano. We saw about 30 of them come, many drug dealers which was good.
We also did parties for the children and the women who are involved in our project to set up micro businesses to enable them to support their families.
We are in the process of trying to rent a house in the community to run courses and have our activities in. As usual with these things, it’s a battle. But we believe that God is in control and we know that being there, as a light physically situated in the community, will have a huge impact on everyone living there and all the activities that go on there.

- pray for structure for the prison ministry, that the Truth would set these young boys free.
